Lol, as I am finding out! It's made even harder that there seems to be big gaps with the census's. I can only find 1841/51 and 1901/1911.

If thats the rigth family on the census, then the birth posted by Susan is not the correct birth, as Bailieborough is in Co. Cavan.

Thanks for your help. I might just e-mail the Irish GRO and see if they help me with the little info I have. This family have given me a bigger headache than my own! :-S

Re: The link you put up. I have used that site numerous times before but assumed that as this is an Irish birth I would need the Irish GRO??

Edit: Yes, I just checked, they only do English and Welsh births.

I keep getting a navy record coming up but when I asked my father-in-law it doesn't ring any bells. That said William fell out with, and cut himself off from his family (he's not with the family on the 1911 census, assuming I am looking at the right people). He married in 1927 and never spoke of his past or family other than to tell a story of the family having a connecting to an area called Fisher-Hill in Ireland, and possibly owning a castle or substantial property. They were apparently very well off but William was dis-inherited.

I have had a look at the Irish GRO and the form states birth address and mothers maiden name must be filled in. Incomplete forms are likely to be returned. It's not as user-friendly as the UK GRO. :-S

Was he by any chance in the Army or Navy around 1911?

That's the family I found Susan, but want the birth cert to get further details on the parents and confirm I have the right family before I go any further back.

Hi, I believe that is the right record but the Irish registry require more information than I have in order to get a copy of the cert.

I have found a family in the 1901 and 1911 census in Ireland I believe are the family I am looking for but have only got occupation (William and his father James were both railway workers) to compare. Also on the census he is down as Thomas William but it's common for my father-in-laws family to swop their Christian names about....my partner and his 2 siblings have done just that).The mothers first name on there is Eliza Ann but I don't want to assume I have the correct family without getting Williams birth cert to confirm.

There is this one but name around the other way Father named James :-)

Hi there,

I'm looking into my father-in-laws family tree for him and an having trouble getting to grips with the Irish records.

The birth I am trying to trace is for a William Thomas Fisher, I know his fathers name to be James, according to his wedding certificate. We know he was definitely born in Ireland and his birth year according to his grave stone and death record is 1890. His wedding cert however puts him at 2 years younger! We are 100% certain we have the right certificate though.

I have found the record I would like to order (it came up as a hint on 'that other website' ) however the form for applying for Irish records asks for address of place of birth (I only have a county) and mothers maiden name, which I do not know, hence me wanting the certificate. Is there anywhere I can find these details so that I can order the certificate?

I have been working my way through the links on the Irish geneology thread but I'm going round in circles getting nowhere fast!
