Hi Jan, no, not my tree on ancestry and hi Patchem, not sure why he was in lodgings ... that is all oral history from my granddad.

Just a quick reply as I need to dash out but yes - the 1871 and 1881 are my family.

Mary Ellen McCabe and Jane (Bridget) McCabe emmigrated to the USA in 1884 (passenger list on ancestry) AND apparently, John Joseph and Alice junior emmigrated a few years later (mid to late 1880s).

I already have a lot of info on James McCluskey's life from 1880 and a lot of work on him was carried out on another thread. I also know a great deal of Mary Ellen and Jane - Alice returned to the UK and married in 1894.

I am not sure if this helps but let me know ...

Is it your tree on Ancestry? Someone has his death as abt. 1884, though no supporting evidence given.

Have you looked for John on the American censuses?
If he went to stay with James McClusky, why was he in lodgings?

My ggg uncle John Joseph McCabe was born c. 1863 in Holbeach, Lincolnshire. He had an uncle James McClusky who lived in Winsconsin, USA (there has been a thread on him sometime ago).

John's family where living in poverty in Middlesbrough, so James McClusky and his wife asked his sister to send over some of her children as they where without children (evidence shows they did have two sons).

Anyway, John apparently died in a steel works accident. According to my granddad, he returned home one night to his lodgings and was drunk. The people he was living where not happy about this and threw him out of the house, and having no where to go he made his way to the place of his employment. He slept in one of the machines in the works, and he was still inside the next morning when it was switched one. He was so hungover he never heard the machines and he was apparently cut in half and lived for a further three days with only half of his body. Another relatives states this accident occured in in Pittsburg, USA, but I've no proof for any of this.

I would love to see if there is any truth in this. He was not in England at the time of the 1891 census, and imagine his death occured between 1885-1905?!

Any ideas?!
