trying to trace my grandmothers sister Dorothy Gregory born 1904 in Ellesmere Shropshire (scotland st.) in 1911 census. as my great grandfather died in 1907 and my great grandmother re-married they are now under Davies in the census. think my only hope is someone out there has Dorothy in there tree and can tell me where they moved to.

If you say where your grandmother married, we can look for marriages in the same area, if appropriate. Or where your great grandmother died. If you have the death certificate of your great grandmother the informant could be one of her children - unmarried daughter, or daughter in married name.

I will try and cover all the questions from you kind people, here we go, Yes those are the right census records.- not got dorothy birth certificate but the sept 1904 is correct. i don t know where my great -grandmother died or when but she was born about 1868- 69 as on her marriage certificate the age given was 23 , so none of those deaths for jane davies match, thanks for the possible marriages i will have a look to see if there are any family trees with those names ceers liz

In the 1911 census Jane Davies's birth year is posted as 1875
You say that she was born 1868-1869 - from the first marriage certificate.
If she claimed a birth year of 1875 to her second husband to make herself appear younger, she may have gone to her grave with all around her believing in that birth year.
Did she try to make herself look older on the first marriage certificate because her husband was a lot older than her?

Dorothy's sisyer married in Nantwich Cheshire,so is it possible that Dorothy moved there too.

Violet May Gregory 1902 married 1925 to Frederick James Ratcliff.

Violet ratcliffe born 3/5/1902 died 19995 in Cheshire.

But the only death of a Henry Gregory I can find in Ellesmere district at the right time is this one, who is a lot older than stated in 1901. Perhaps he was making himself seem younger for a young wife, Patchem?!

I have a feeling mother is not Jane Roberts !!!

A copy of the marriage of Jane Gregory to Joseph Davies would give you her Father [ hopefully ]

Can I ask what makes you think Jane Roberts is wrong? Apart from no conclusive death for Henry?

This is my reasoning:
For the 1901 census, that's the only Jane Gregory (in fact, the only Jane of any surname) who comes up on Ancestry with the same POB, and roughly approximate YOB as for Jane Davies in 1911 census.

If that's correct, then Arthur, in 1911, is the only Arthur Gregory who has the same YOB and POB as the one in 1901.

And if that's correct, then Jane and Sarah Roberts are the only sisters I could find in the right area, with matching YOB's, the right POB, and the same names as two women who married a Henry Gregory and a Henry Jones respectively.

But I'm open to persuasion!

And certainly, the marriage cert would save us all from heading off on possible wild goose chases.

hello again, info update that is the right violet may ( my grandmother) it is her sister dorothy and her mother jane i am trying to trace. thanks to argyllgran for the deaths i will look into the possible connections , but none of the ages match exactly , but this woman according to census records and the certificates i have seems not to know when she was born, i guess she lied because her first husband was 14yrs older and second was 8yrs younger.- yes mavis violet & dorothy,s mother was a roberts , there were 7 children . 4died as infants , 1 went to live with aunt & uncle when jane re-married and she kept the 2 youngest violet & dorothy thanks again to you all

yes ag you have got it right the arthur ( authur in some census) is jane,s son who went to live with her sister sarah and her husband henry jones , when his farther died in 1907

Well my theory is wrong then -- if you have the birth cert for Violet then fine.

I did see the Jane and Henry Gregory and sons 1901 there is a Henry and Jane Gregory on the 1911 think she was Jane Didlick = Dec 1900

I also was looking at a Mary Jane Manford born St Martins 1875 then spotted a Davies / Manford child born 1914 Oswestry - Joseph F Davies -- which set me thinking ??

re- jane davies , hello again i have just recieved the death cert i ordered and guess what, wrong one this jane davies was the widow of a hugh davies and my gr grandmother was married to a joseph henry , so i guess its back to the drawing board- any one got any other suggestions

Dorothy Gregory does not appear in anyone's tree on GR.......not even yours.

You need to include people in your tree in case anyone else is researching them and wishes to make contact

If you purchase Dorothy's birth cert, you will know her exact DOB, which will enable a search to be made for her death...........if she died after 1969.
