UPDATE
Many thanks to you all. I did look at Catherine's 1901 family but rootgatherer's question about the witness to the wedding has paid dividends. Christina Ronan, married by1901 was Christina Fay and when I asked my mother in law if she knew of any she said, "My grandmother was a Fay" which led to much trawling of the internet and baptisms fron the irishgenealogy site showing the mother's maiden name as Fay (and a sponsor as Ellen Fay), which fitted exactly with the following 1901 census family

4.4 Hill Street (Mountjoy, Dublin)
Richardson Maryann 3 Female Daughter Roman Catholic City of Dublin - Cannot read - - -
Richardson Thomas 35 Male Head of Family Roman Catholic City of Dublin Car Driver Read and write - Married -
Richardson James 13 Male Son Roman Catholic City of Dublin Scholar Read and write - - -
Richardson Patrick 8 Male Son Roman Catholic City of Dublin Scholar Read and write - - -
Richardson Mary 29 Female Wife Roman Catholic

Thomas Richardson was listed as a car driver (carman on marriage certificate). So I think although Ellen was Ellen when married and buried she was born as Maryann. No sign of any of them in 1911 though.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks to you all. I think my best course would be to apply to the GRO in Dublin for a search. There is a 'female' Richardson at the right time or others with the wrong father's name, from what I could see, but I appreciate fresh eyes and any advice. Irish research is certainly better than it used to be but this birth/baptism is causing a problem.

Catherine, Yes he did remarry a Sarah Byrne. We know of this marriage and the subsequent children

Hi Catherine,

Thanks for your reply. I know nothing else about Ellen. My mother in law believed she and her family were Dubliners but your census finding is interesting and would explain why I can't find her in Dublin. Many thanks.

She lived with her father, as far as I know. He lived in Gloucester Place at the time of the marriage. He remarried in the late 1920s. The witnesses were a James Price and a Christina Ronan. Many thanks. Rose

Who did your mother-in-law live with when she was a child please?

Where did her parents marry and who were the witnesses please?

Rose

Rose Report 5 Feb 2013 19:51

My mother in law is 91. Her mother died when she was only 2 and she would dearly like to know more about her and her family. She was called Ellen Richardson. I have both her marriage and death certificates She died in 1924 aged 26 and was married in August 1919 (as a spinster) to a David Oglesby. He was born in April 1899. The marriage certificate states he was a minor whilst she was of full age. Her father is given as Thomas Richardson, (a carman) and her address as Corporation Street. Despite all the records now available free to view online, including the 1901 and 1911 census, I can find no record of her birth/baptism or family details. Any help locating this birth/baptism or connections to her family would be gratefully received.
