Find Ancestors

Hi, I am trying to trace Daniel and Agnes Docherty, born late 1700's, in Ireland. They had a daughter Rosanna Docherty who married Hugh Gallocher (Gallacher). Rosanna and Hugh brought their family to Scotland and lived eventually in Ayrshire.

I could also do with some advice on how to search in Ireland --- does anyone know what Irish ports were used and what Scottish port they would have arrived at?

Any web sites I can search passenger list for boats leaving Ireland for Scotland!

All the names have various spellings. Any info would be grateful as I'm stuck!! regards Elizabeth

No records were kept of travel within the UK, except accidentally, which could happen if they boarded a transatlantic vessel when it paused at, say Derry, and they'ld be included in with the passengers disembarking at, say, Glasgow.

Boats between Ireland, Scotland and England were all ferries .................... so, as mgnv said, no passenger lists were kept.

Plus many people might well have travelled on fishing boats, and the like. Or even on smugglers' boats


As to ports ..................... any fishing port along the coast, or from any cove to another cove.

If you post when and where Hugh and Rosanna are found in Ayrshire and what info.you already have..eg first Census you find them it may be possibe to work back . There were numerous places from where people travelled to Scotland ...Moville in the Co Donegal being one of them...both Docherty/Gallagher(variations) are Donegal names but thats just an example.
