My cousin has an ancestor - Sarah Elizabeth Blaylock b. 1896 Flimby, Cumberland. She is the daughter of Mason and Jane Blaylock. In 1922 - after the family had moved to Northumberland - she married an Alexander Errel. Well I have searched both Freebmd and Ancestry to find the births of any Errel/Blaylock in Northumberland to establish what children they may have had. Not one solitary Blaylock/Errel birth appeared. I find this most unusual. Either they both emigrated or died before a family was produced. A new experience for me !!

Ah - just found a death for an Alexander Arrel reg 1924 Morpeth(correct area) but no sign as yet of a Sarah Erriel re-marrying.

So does his age at death in 1924 match with the marriage cert ?

Not sure why you thought it unusual not to have children

GlitterBaby Report 9 Jan 2013 13:19

This would match the 1924 death

But is it the same man

Childless couples are very common. No infertilty treatment back then.

But if Sarah was an ancestor of your cousin she must have had at least one child. From which child does your cousin descend?

Margaret

Margaret Report 9 Jan 2013 13:49

Hi Everyone - sorry to say the Alexander Arrel I found is not the correct fellow - he is too old.

Margee - Sarah was the sister of Mason and Jane Blaylock's son Jonathan, so was my c usins great-aunt. It's not vital that we find this, but like most on here we like to explore/investigate the 'twiglets' if we can. Thank you all for your help.

As for being surprised about no children - our family line does not seem to have ever been 'childless' before and the absence of TV makes it more uncommon !!! (says she tongue in cheek)

You wonderful people. I only fleetingly considered emigration - that side of the family wasn't the most adventurous. Really am grateful to you all.

They are buried in Wonthaggi Cemetery - the reference number starting with w indicates that there is a photo of a headstone available

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ausgbc/wonthaggi.htm

Wonthaggi w1775 Errel Alex (died) 1963
Wonthaggi w1775 Errel Jim No dates infant
Wonthaggi w1910 Errel Sarah Elizabeth (born) 1896 (died) 1994

Strange that Sarah wasn't buried with her family, but after 31 years, may be no one realised that they were there?
