Re: Rachel (Rachael) Beckett b. 1859

Margaret Report 11 Nov 2012 10:29

Hello - can anyone help me - I've hit a brick wall !
I have Rachel or Rachael Beckett's parents as William Beckett b. 1831 and Martha Halliwell b. 1832. Martha Halliwell's parents were John Halliwell b. 1802 & Betty Moor b. 1806
My problem started when I found 2 marriage entries in the Lancashire BMD for Rachel Beckett both in the year 1883 and both married at the Blackburn Register Office.
1. Rachel Beckett to Alfred Bury1883
2. Rachel Beckett to William Riley 1883
Apparently the Rachel Beckett who married Alfred Bury immigrated to the USA. The Rachel Beckett who married William Riley has census records through to 1911 in the UK - I had chosen to go with Rachel Beckett who married William Riley until I looked up the Mundia records and found a photo of the headstone & record of Rachel Halliwell Beckett who married Alfred Bury, in the USA Unfortunately the owner of the tree did not have any parents recorded for that Rachel Beckett hence the brick wall
Would very much appreciate help with this
Kind Regards
Margaret Halliwell Dwight

How are you connected to Racel and how have you got back to her?

Hello Margaret, where exactly was your Rachel born?

According to that Ancestry tree (which you came across via Mundia) they have Rachel as being 12 years old when she married Alfred Bury in 1871. I'd take their research and accuracy with a pinch of salt!

I think the Rachel who married William Riley is this one as she has children called Leah and Annie

She is the daughter of Elisha Beckett and Ann and is noted as 8 months old in the 1860 census

I see the dilemma:

Births Dec 1859 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BECKETT Rachel Blackburn 8e 297

Births Sep 1860 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BECKETT Rachel Blackburn 8e 293

But the one whose birth was registered in Sept. 1860 wouldn't be aged 1 on the 61 census which was taken 7 April. So the one on the census must be the first one.

Edit: She's also the first one whose gravestone is online giving a birthdate of 10 Dec. 1859, Blackburn.
Ergo the daughter of William & Martha married Alfred Bury and emigrated.

MargaretM Report 11 Nov 2012 11:17

The only way to confirm is to buy both certificates:

Births Dec 1859 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BECKETT Rachel Blackburn 8e 297

Marriages Sep 1883 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Beckett Rachel Blackburn 8e 649
BURY Alfred Blackburn 8e 649

Margaret Report 11 Nov 2012 11:20

Hi everyone
My Rachel Beckett was born 1859 Blackburn, Lancashire to parents William Beckett and Martha Halliwell. I think Martha had 3 children - Rachel b. 1859; James Halliwell Beckett b. 1861 and Nancy Beckett b. 1864 all born Blackburn, before she died circa 1867
I think William Beckett then remarried in 1869 to a Betty Halliwell (don't know if she was a relation to Martha or not)
The marriage of Rachel Beckett to Alfred Bury was in 1883 according to the Lancashire BMD, not 1871 as on Ancestry.
If someone can find out the parents of either Rachel who married Alfred Bury or Rachel who married William Riley - I'd be so grateful.
Kind Regards
Margaret

Rachel who married William Riley parents are Elisha and Ann as posted above.
How is she connected to you??

Didn't I prove that Rachel born 1859, daughter of William & Martha was the one who married Alfred Bury and emigrated to USA?

Evidently not a direct ancestor, Jude, or Margaret would know who she married.

"Many thanks for your imput.
Unfortunately I don't have the exact birth- date of Rachel Beckett only the Lancashire BMD record of Rachel in 1859 born Blackburn. Mother's maiden name, Halliwell. B/82/46.
The birthdate on the headstone certainly ties in but I don't know if this Rachel Beckett who married Alfred Bury is my ancestor or the one who married William Riley - both Rachel's married in 1883 and both were recorded at the Blackburn Register Office so until I know her parents I can only guess.
Many thanks
Margaret"

Sorry Margaret - I thought you knew her parents?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 11 Nov 2012 12:01

Agree with Margee - the Rachel married to Arthur Bury is logistically more likely to be correct.

Margaret, PLEASE! Answer Jude's question. How did you get back to her? You say she's an ancestor?

Margaret

Margaret Report 11 Nov 2012 13:23

Hi Everyone
Many thanks for all the information - I agree with Margee that my Rachel did in fact marry Arthur Bury and immigrate to the USA. Her parents were William Beckett and Martha Halliwell (my Great Grand Aunt) and Rachel born 1859 was my 1st cousin 2x removed.
Thanks Astra for your valuable info. regarding Rachel who married William Riley parents are Elisha and Ann which proves beyond a doubt that my Rachel married Arthur Bury
Once again thanks heaps!
Margaret.
