................as naval records for your John don't start until 1864, then this is probably not him!

Thanks for the replies so far in response to the questions:-

His parent’s details came from a copy of John Matthews marriage certificate.
He married Helen / Ellen Lynch in 1868 in Aberdeen while servicing on HMS Winchester.

Unlike the records in England the Scottish records record the parents and the maiden name of the mother so the entry for John’s parents reads:-

Thomas Matthews, Labour
Sarah Matthews maiden name Dickens.

With regards the BMD birth John Matthews Luton 6 87 I purchased that certificate a few weeks ago unfortunately it doesn’t match on the date of birth or the mother names.

The Continuous Service Number: 6032B is John Matthews I purchased that document from Kew 2 weeks ago but it also has Eden Lowden, Bedfordshire as the place of birth. The Kew index has it as Eden Lodge but again I have not been able to find Eden Lodge on a map.

His official Navy service number is 49896 he served on the following ships.

Hi,

I have been researching my Great Grandfather John Matthews I know from his Navy records which I got from Kew he was born 27th October 1840 and gives his place of birth as Eden Lowden, Bedfordshire I have not been able to locate Eden Lowden on a map.

His parents should be Thomas Matthews and Sarah Dickens I have not been able to find the family in the 1840, 1851 or 1861 census nor have I been able to track down his birth certificate.

I would be grateful if someone could look up the family in the Bedfordshire parish records to establish where the family are living in 1840 ad if John has any other brothers or sisters which might enable me to track down the family in the census.
