Does anyone know how I can find which John Smith from amongst the many which will give me a lead to tracing ancestors. I know he married Rachel Rawlings 1912 Long Ashton and they had a daughter 1913 called Minnie. I am led to believe that they were romany gypsies. Any help appreciated.

Hi Ruth.
First question - do you have his marriage cert?

A copy of his marriage cert should show his age and his fathers name and occupation(if known). You might then be able to find him in 1911 census.

No I havent yet got marriage cert, I was hoping to trace something without having to get certificate. I have traced the Rawlings family easily but Smith giving me a problem. I have some of the Smith family which relatives seem to have heard of as Aunts and Uncles but none tie up with a John.

Was Rachel the one born Yatton? If so, just hang onto this for future ref. But you do need the marriage cert r4eally.

Thanks Ive noted all the above. I do know family dealt with horses and were licenced Hawkers. Later some of the relatives lived in a carriage near Bampton, but also were around Bath and Marshfield which is close to Castle Combe. There daughter Minnie celebrated 2 differant dates for her birthday as records were a bit iffy when she became a pensioner we know family were romany gypsies.

Well, there is a horse connection with the above family obviously, but no notion of them being travellers.
Get the marriage cert, then let us know what you find.
Good luck!
