John (Jack) Sedgewick/Sedwick/Sidwick/Sigwick .
Hi, I know this will be like finding a needle in a haystack, But I am trying to find out about my grandfather prior to 1942.

All I know was that he was born somewhere in Yorkshire between 1903-1908 & had at least one sister.
He was born John (Jack) Sedgewick/Sedwick/Sidwick/Sigwick .
The story goes that the elusive Mr John Sedgewick came to London in the late 1930’ early 1940’s to avoid call up, he then changed his name, whether illegally or legally to JOHN LEACH.
He had been married, this we know as he was imprisoned for been a bigamist in the mid 1940’s he never married my grandmother so the marriages were prior to 1944 either in Yorkshire or in London.
His trade was a Stone Mason.

This is the ALL the information I have on him prior to 1944. We have searched & searched and contacted many people via forums, but nothing becomes avail. We have also sort the help of a professional Genealogist, but unfortunately that became far too expensive for us to continue.
I hope that hopefully someone may also have an elusive John Sedgewick in their tree that can make a connection with us.

Kind Regards
Maria

Do the court records name his first wife?

Maria

Maria Report 1 Nov 2012 19:11

Hi all, I do have a death for him, but it is under his alleged name of John Leach. he died in March 1958 Hayes, Middlesex.
when my Uncle registered the death he said he was 55 but then realised after the registration that he was actually 52, making him born in 1906, No one actually knows the real date of birth.
I have no other information on him what so ever.

I have many birth certificates of John sedgewick's born in and around Yorkshire but none of them coincide with my John . I even thought that maybe his father was a Raymond or he's middle name may of been Raymond as my father is called Raymond.... but nothing.

The only lead that i may have is a marriage of a John Leach in 1940 to a Leone GL Read (widow) but his age is given as 39, although he is a bachelor Occ: General labourer
Abode: is in Hillingdon not to far from where my grandmother was living
Father given as John robert Leach (deceased).

But what makes me believe this could be him is the fact that according to the Electoral role in 1936, Leone GL Read was living in a house (with another couple) that virtually backed onto my Grandmothers sister's house in Hayes Middlesex. plus i have been unable to find a death or any children for this couple.... any advice would be very much appreciated? .

Have you checked for newspaper reports about his conviction? Not sure if you can access court records or not.
The above marriage sounds promising but doesn't get you much further does it!
Presumably you have details for Leone - I wonder if it's worth tracking her family down? If she was married to a bigamist they would probably know!
Here is her other marriage, not sure if this is her maiden name or not obviously:

Hi Jan, thank you for your help, I have checked the local news paper archives and the Times news papers for a bigamist case between the years of 1945-1948 as my father remembers his mother going off to visit him in prison when he was small child. there was only one case of bigamy, unfortunately not the one i was looking for.
As for court records i wouldn't even know where to start & if at all possible.

I also have the index for Leone previous marriage to George (maiden name Mathey). I think I just may have to look deeper into her background.

Maria
