Found this parish record and wondered if anyone knew where LUTH was ?
Or is it just a place mistranscribed ? Tried Google ... nothing.

Baptisms: 5 Sep 1792 St Anne, Woodplumpton, Lancashire, England
Peggy Charnley - Daughter of John Charnley
Abode: Luth

(Woodplumpton is Preston/ Catforth area)

could it be Lund?

Lund is the parish of Newton with Scales, Clifton & Salwick and is basically next to Woodplumpton. As far as I am aware there is no house named Luth in the area and certainly no village, though there are several Charnleys and Chamleys

ps you seem to have hit the submit button twice Mike

I think I am wrong Mike

looking at the registers for Woodplumton there are many others

Baptism: 27 May 1792 St Anne, Woodplumpton, Lancashire, England
Mary Porter - Daughter of James Porter
Born: 22 Apr 1792
Abode: Luth in Catforth
Register: Baptisms 1782 - 1812, Page 15, Entry 9
Source: LDS Film 1470949

so possibly the old name of a farm & farm cottages in Catforth

Sorry Mike, can't help with location, but this appears to be another child. Surely they're not both mistranscribed?

I think on that search engine Vera the heading has been mis-typed and should read Louth Lincolnshire as it is an advert for someone in Louth Lincolnshire

I also added to the other thread that there are several occurances of Luth in Woodplumpton registers both baptism and burial

All info for Margaret/ Peggy Charnley says born Catforth so Luth must be part of Catforth, but I've never heard of it before ( and I only live 3 miles away !).

Thanks to all for replies.
Just surprised I couldn't find it on Google.
Might need to get some old maps out at the library

snap - I only live about 3 miles from Catforth too and I hadn't heard of it either

I wonder if it only existed for a certain length of time as I could only find references to it for a certain period

how about this one Mike

Lewth - old spelling Luth or that particular vicar's spelling??

it is an area about halfway between Inskip and the start of Newsham Hall Lane at Woodplumpton There is a Lewth Hall & a Lewth Farm shown on the area's street atlas

Mike * Report 31 Oct 2012 17:46

That seems very likely.
Just looked at a map and there is a Lewth Lane now (B5269)

We'll put it down to a dyslexic vicar at St Annes. !

Thanks everyone for your input.

I did a search at http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/ in the web page having your Peggy and got 7 hits for Luth - some of them say "Abode: Luth in Catforth"
On a modern map, there's a Lewth abt 1km N of Catforth (and 3kms NW of Woodplumpton).
