Hi im wondering if anyone could kindly help me. I am looking for the where abouts of a JOHN OTLEY, approx born 1816 give or take a couple of years. He married ELIZABETH CRESWICK IN 1838 in Sheffield. He doesnt seem to be on the 1841 census, ive checked death records but things are not adding up.

Any information or help with this would be appreciated. thankyou :-)

A tree on Ancestry suggests that he died 24 Nov 1842 in Sheffield. and that his wife died in Nov 1874.

This could be John's death on freebmd:

The 1841 census shows a John Otley in a debtors' prison and Elizabeth Otley in Eccleshall Bierlow Workhouse. Year of birth for both given as 1821.

However if the death in 1842 is correct it doesn't explain Elizabeth's appearance in the 1851 census with four children born between 1842 and 1851 unless they had a different father.

CRESWICK, Esther Sister F 17 1834 House Servant

BRADLEY, James Son Unmarried M 14 1837 Brass Turner

SON, William M 9 1842 Scholar Sheffield, Yorkshire

(I think the last named should be William Bradley, son)

Two further children born 1853 and 1855 listed with Elizabeth in 1861 and the lodger Henry Bradley is still in the household.

I can't see a birth registration for any of the children so sending for a birth certificate for one of them to check the father's name doesn't appear to be an option.
