Hi Sandra,
If a burial is registered pre 1855, then it may be included on the Mortcloth for the parish where the burial took place.
The Mortcloth Section is often included in the OPR fiche.

The easiest way would be to find a library that hold the fiche for the parish that you are looking for and search the mortcloth entries.
What parish?

There are 3 places in Scotland where you can view all the records digitally.

1 )Scotlands People in Edinburgh... (has additional digitised material)
2) Mitchell Library in Glasgow
3) Family history centre in Kilmarnock

All should have OPRs ( Old Parochial Records)

Each of these 3 centres charge £15 for a full day, but you have unlimited access to the records, pre 1855 right up to present day.
All the same embargos as SP apply ....but only to printing/saving records
Although you can view them, more recent records cannot be printed or saved but you can take notes. ( births within the last 100yrs ect)

Hope this helps
Anne

HI Kay can you tell me how I get information regarding the mort cloth

Regarding my above question I have researched heaps of pre1855 deaths on Scotlands People to no avail.

The surname is so common (Scott) I'm thinking it might be cheaper to spend a day at either National archives in Edinburgh or the Scotlands people Centre

I have heard you pay a daily fee but I don't know WHICH ONEwould give me the most information and how much they charge and do you have to book?.

I have found that a lot of scottish family history groups will not sell monumental inscription booklets to non members.

Buriel records are few in Scotland pre 1855.....there maybe a mortcloth hire record or a monumental record,,,,,pre 1855 womens maiden name was used on many head stones.....

SP do have some pre 1855 buriel records but do not record plot numbers.

I would like to know how I can find out pre 1855 deaths of children in Scotland which are not stated on any census in Scotlands People.

Do I write to the parishes where I think they were born? or do I go to the Scotlands people Centre or to the National archives in Edinburgh?
