ancestry also have transcriptions and images for some West Yorkshire parish records, which may be what rootgather was using on your previous thread.

The original parish records might well have witness names and these can sometimes be useful in establishing family links, if they are unusual.

I have a printout of a copy of a 1792 marriage in Sussex and witness signatures are shown, although these are not mentioned for that record on familysearch.

Rootgatherer very likely got the information for the 1851 marriage from ancestry .............. they are carrying the London Metropolitan Archives records


If you are lucky enough to have someone married in certain of the parishes in London (not all), you can see the actual Parish Register online.


Another place to look is www.familysearch.org/ ................... although many of their Parish records are not indexed. You first have to find out whether they have the registers for the place and time, and then search page by page.


BUT you do only start to get the full information on fathers and witnesses after July 1 1837.

This is all that is showing on http://www.freereg.org.uk
Probably the same as on familysearch. These older records usually don't have the same detail as more recent ones as it was not compulsory to record them.

On a post of mine from last night, details of a marriage was given (1851) including the fathers name and even the witnesses. I dont know where the poster (Rootgather) got this info from. I have a marriage from familysearch for John Appleby to Margaret Bradley at Hornby by Bedale, 5 February 1799. Is anyone able to provide the same details as above or is this marriage too early for those kind of details? Thanks.
SORRY Name is Margaret Bradford not Bradley
