Hello

I wonder if anyone could help me ?

My G,G,G,G Grandfather, Robert Gigile/Jiggal was born in Huddersfield in 1811, he was baptised by his mum Hannah Jiggal on 14th April 1811 in Horbury, nr Wakefield, and the entry was recorded as a natural child. I came to a complete stop with this part of my family and I understand a natural child is a polite term for born illegitemate. Hence my stuggle to find his father !

I need to find Hannahs relatives but have only this information

I am grateful for any help
Kind Regards Sue ( nee pullan )

Depending on when Hannah was born, she may have been affected by this:

"In 1783 the British government passed a stamp duty act to help pay for the American War of Independence. In particular a tax of 3d was to be paid on every entry in a parish register. The incumbent was empowered to collect this tax and entitled to keep a small proportion for his trouble. However paupers were exempt from paying the tax. The tax was deeply unpopular and was finally repealed in 1794."

The effects were that some children went unbaptised altogether, and others were baptised as a family job lot after the repeal of the act in 1794, possibly several years after their birth.

Very interesting thank you !

You might be lucky, if her parents could afford the tax, but it might explain things if you can't find a baptism for her, or lead you to consider a later baptism that you might have thought would be 'too young' to be Hannah.

mmm.... thank you, 3d in those days was a fortune no doubt., may have to do some more digging into hannah's date's ?

In those days she would most probable been a pauper as an un-married mother?

VERY, VERY interesting Thank you so much
Kindest Regard

This site has transcriptions for Horbury St. Peter and St. Leonard parish registers (where Robert was baptised) under the heading Church Records, but I can't see anything for Hannah:

Nope ! ..... Hannah is an enigma ! can't find her there either - must be from Huddersfield or around that area ?

I have found a 2nd or 3rd removed? cousin ? who has Giggles etc ! back to William Giggle in 1600 in Batley, we share so many links, yet it stops blank on my side with Robert and his mum Hannah ? shes completeley stumped too !
