So this is her?? Was she usually known as Dolly? She was almost the same age as the couple adopting her??

Looking at the image..........would anyone agree that she is actually 2 yrs old and not 25??

That's exactly what I thought Prickles!

alviegal

alviegal Report 25 Oct 2012 21:34

It could possibly be 2. The enumerator had made a few mistakes which he had corrected. Frederick and Marion had had 2 children but 1 had died by 1911.

PricklyHolly

PricklyHolly Report 25 Oct 2012 21:37

It looks to me as if the figure after the 2 has been crossed out and replaced with 2.

The census was filled in by Frederick...........he seems to have made a bit of a mess of it!

Don't know if it was a Birmingham thing or elsewhere too but someone with the name Dorothy was known as Dolly aswell as Dot.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 30 Oct 2012 00:05

Dolly or Doll was a very common diminutive for Doris.

But there's no knowing what her name was at birth........and no official adoption until the mid-1920's

In those days, children born out of wedlock were often 'adopted' within the family.
