NNW of Tanfield from Stanley is fine - I didn't wish to be quite so precise.....

General consensus seems to be we have the correct Hannah. Should I write to the owner of the Ancestry tree and make them aware?

1881 definitely says Sherfield - my guess is the enumerator had difficulty transcribing John's writing of Tanfield.

Thanks Jill, Tanfield is just west of Stanley so it would seem to be her in the census and she has the same parents as Mike found.

No, Jill, it's just that I've always wondered where that particular layout came from............I can never make head nor tail of it. Lack of familiarity, I guess.

The only way to be sure is to get the marriage cert, for her father's details.

I think the tree on Ancestry has used that site's link for Hannah Gray, which does indeed link the records to one born in the Huddersfield area.

The 1881 original shows Sherfield. Can't see what else it could be.

Hmmm. The only Sherfield I have found is over three hundred miles away.

Going to have a look at the originals to check on other possible places.

I have the 1881 census for Hannah Harrison with her husband John Robert and four children living Richmond, Catterick. The G.R. single line census gives her place of birth as Sherfield and in the 1891 it is shown as Thorpe. Unfortunately she does not show up in 1901 probably because

A tree in Ancestry via Mundia suggests she comes from Lockwood, Huddersfield but I am at a loss to see how to equate this info. Can anybody see anything to prove one way or the other whether this could be true please?
