Hi
Can anyone tell me is there a way to search a depoll register? Quite a few members of my family changed there names by depoll (in one family - my father and his siblings - there were 6 of them including a set of twins who all changed there surnames from there registered birth name to all different surnames - 1 changed to his mothers maiden name and the rest are to random or other surnames not one of them has the same surname and this is not done through marriage?!) Im now very confused and have a very large confusing family.
Thanks
Ceri

A research guide

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/research-guides/change-of-name.htm

From 1914 all enrolled deeds poll had to be advertised in the Gazette.

http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/

And in fact my OH's mother changed their surname by Deed Poll in 1957 and it was recorded in the London Gazette.

The only problem is that you can, and have always been able to, change your name without formal registration as long as it is not for illegal purposes.....I have done so myself!

So maybe your family/ies did by mutual consent without feeling the need to go down an official route.
