Does anyone know Maria's date/place of birth (around 1820, London or Scotland) |

For Scottish marriages, you will need to access Scotlands people website....and pay for credits. |

Right, I can see them on various census reports. How odd that she gives different birthplaces! Unless her husband married 2 maria's of course! |

There is a very large gap between the son James and the next child............. |

EDIT On reflection, this James is a blacksmith so not likely! |

Doesn't help, but does confirm birthplace. So it looks like Scotlands People is the way to go. |

Many thanks for the responses. The 1841 and 1861 censuses are correct and I have found James Allan's birth on scotlandspeople but no marriage and nothing anywhere pre1841 for Maria Boag. |

There are several baptisms in Scotland on famiysearch but without knowing which part of Scotland she came from, it would be impossible to say which is hers. |

Did any of the children have a middle name, as mother's maiden names were quite often used as middle names in Scotland. |
