Does anyone know Maria's date/place of birth (around 1820, London or Scotland)
or the date/place of her marriage to shoemaker James Allan (b Edinburgh 1818).
They lived in Newcastle on Tyne and are my g/g grandparents.
Maria once gives her maiden name as Raine.

For Scottish marriages, you will need to access Scotlands people website....and pay for credits.

It is not a subscription site.

Alternatively, try the IGI, on familysearch website

Welcome to the boards Morgan.
Can you say how you got back to them - I assume from the birth of a child? If you have them on a census please point us to it.

Right, I can see them on various census reports. How odd that she gives different birthplaces! Unless her husband married 2 maria's of course!
I see he was born Edinburgh and all children born Northumberland, so Scotland seems the more likely.

Morgan

You say that she 'once' gave her maiden name as Raine.

Could you expain under what circumstances she is found as Raine and where you have found her as Boag?

This could help in Brummiejan's suggestion of two Marias!

There is a very large gap between the son James and the next child.............

EDIT On reflection, this James is a blacksmith so not likely!

I think the above 1861 might be a different couple altogether??

Many thanks for the responses. The 1841 and 1861 censuses are correct and I have found James Allan's birth on scotlandspeople but no marriage and nothing anywhere pre1841 for Maria Boag.
They had four children, and on one birth certificate the mother is Maria Raine not Maria Boag - but it's a middle child. The oldest and youngest children's certs both say Maria Boag. She was illiterate so she would not have noticed any error by the registrar but it's still a mystery.
They had lots of grandchildren so I'm still hoping that someone out there has the answer.
Thanks again.

There are several baptisms in Scotland on famiysearch but without knowing which part of Scotland she came from, it would be impossible to say which is hers.

Potty

Potty Report 19 Oct 2012 16:43

Did any of the children have a middle name, as mother's maiden names were quite often used as middle names in Scotland.

Morgan Report 23 Oct 2012 16:39

Polly's suggeston is excellent.
The youngest child is Ann Grey Allan but the Grey almost certainly refers to the husband's mother (born Helen Gray). Two children Catherine and James do not seem to have middle names and the fourth George seems to be unregistered - he might hold the key.
Thanks again
