i think it s definately the one on ancestry, probably american relatives have put it on. Edward charles doesnt seem like a name that family would use, but could be wrong.
It will most probably be that mary crane and james ellis marriage thats the correct one. Its a long time since ive checked this branch of the family, and not been in contact with american ones for a long time now. They will have the certificates i am sure. Think i need to check with them if they have the birth for edward ellis senior.
I suppose there is always the chance that the tree on ancestry is wrong, and they have been following the wrong trail, but the names match, there was always a sarah alice in the family. Strange how james seems to change trades, would he have gone from a shoemaker to a gardner. ? I suppose they would need to just follow the work i guess? :-)

Just a daft thought, but could shoemaker and blacksmith have got mixed up? The latter does make horse shoes.

Shirley, until the early 1870s there were no penalties if parents didn't register births so many didn't. Possible he's one of those.

A copy of his marriage certificate should confirm his father (if known).

Can anyone check for me on the 1891 census to see if it gives a birthplace of edward ellis born approx 1857.? He is living with a family called bird on the 1881 census in barnoldswick as a lodger. He is lodging also with his wife to be , alice brooks who was born in 1863, supposedly in barnoldswick too. They married in 1881 in skipton district, which was probably barnoldswick church back then, st mary le ghyll. It gives no birth place for him on the 1881 census .
