Yes I do try too. Or I make a note of it specifically in my tree. And yes, I really need to get an ancestry sub, but it will have to wait to Christmas. Then I can double check everything then, and I will do so.

Along with this, I usually ask for more information about the Swales/Stephensons and Pattisons as they are such a large family (often marrying into one another), and born in similar towns (which seems to change in later sources) and ages can change. There are many case of daughters marrying husbands with the their father's name, and sometimes with their father-in-laws name. The fact that a lot of the quiries are not always resolved on here makes me feel ok about asking for help as it can be difficult. But no, my tree is huge and the vast majority of that work has been carried out myself by visiting various archives and such over a period of 10 years this gone July.

And Gai - thank you - yes I would love to be inclided in Steve's work. Is there specifically an email address I can find him at?

If you need help with the surname Swales there is a gentleman by the name of Steve Swales who has traced many with the surname. Steve has completed 30 odd family trees containing the name.

I am unsure about that marriage of this man

If, and it looks as if he did, marry a Margaret Swales, I am not convinced that she was the widow of your Francis because of the age difference. I can't see him on the 1901 census.

I am also confused about that Adams family in 1901.

Both of these are listed as son of the Head of the house?

Right Point 1 - Richard Swales (1850-1925) had a son John who married Eliza McClean in 1898.

The Caleb Swales you found in 1901 is actually a son of Caleb Adams ... his FIRST wife, Margaret Swales (1848-1882) was a sister of Richard Swales (1850-1925) and Francis Swales (1839-1892). Does that makes sense. This Caleb S Adams was born in Guisoborough in 1877 but seems to have taken his mother name by 1901 (his father and step-mother had quarelled over their children in the early 1890s and it made the local papers - the town was engrossed apparently).

So, now, to add confusion is there another Caleb Swales in 1901? The son of Francis Swales (1839-1892)?

Catherine - I am getting confused (not unsual!) but is that Richard McLean not a bit young to have been Margaret's second husband? Not immpossible I know but a 20 year age difference was quite a lot in those days.
