Lady on here and also on Ancestry state Robert lilly 1827 son of Robert 1794 and Jane Rogers 1796.


Parents of Robert 1794 were Mary DAWBER 1754 and Richard Lilly/Lilley 1740.

As Clara was raised in Dawber's household she may well have believed or even have been told that she was his daughter. It was certainly not unknown for grandparents to pretend to be the parents of an illegitimate child of one of their own children.

When answering the enumerators questions at census time however the truth may have been given.

All should be revealed when you get the copy of her birth certificate.

Thank you for that. Yes that is the right marriage for clara. She could be his but why would he say she was his granddaughter in both the 1871 and 81 census. I will just have to send for the birth or marriage cert

A copy of this certificate should provide the answer to who Clara's mother was but I suspect that no father will be named.

There seems to be some confussion here. It seems that Dawber fathers name could either be Richard (according to the mariage) or Robert according to the birth. So all I have to do now is find out which is correct. I would hate to go down the wrong tree. Surely there cant be many Dawber /Daubers born in gainsborough.
