Thanks all.............Ok..there are several possibilities of a birth just pre 1800 for james Gregson..........too many options really...............but can anybody find a similar dated birth for Grace Steward.the nearest i can get is 1774........remember in 1851 Grace Gregson is shown as from Liverpool...which ain't that far from Blackburn...

I really appreciate your replies..

The 1841 census rounds down adult ages to the nearest 5 years so although James is said to be 40 he could have been anything up to 44.

Adult ages in 1841 were rounded down to nearest 5 so James could have been up to 4 years older than stated. Which makes him old enough to marry ( you could marry at age 14 then )

Hi Stuart.thanks for thst..and it ties in nicely with the 1851...but as you know 1841 only gives Born in county or not in county........notice on 1841 the dates for James and Grace............makes him 13 when his eldest was born...........
here are the baptism dates..showing the farce of ages on the early censuses:

Ellen 11.04.1814
Mary 19.07.1818
George 13.10.1820
Edmund 24.12.1822 (did not survive to 1841)
Richard my GG grandfather..10.04.1818....

and yes James was a labourer in a cotton mill and then a carder....would be grest to find Grace's maiden name!

Thanks again.

I would be very grateful if some kind (and brilliant!) person could find a marriage for the above.
He is one of my GGGGrandfathers on my mother's side..........

According to the 1851 Census he was from Samlesbury near Preson and Grace from Liverpool.
They had at least five children at Samlesbury..I have their baptism dates between 1814 and 1824.........
Taking account of errors in ages on the census both james and Grace were born back end of the 18th century..though Grace appears to be older then James.
I have trawled through Lancashire Oplc and Family Search.org......without success........I can't eve find them on the 1841

Any ideas pretty please?????
PS this is my own family and nothing to do with my Derbyshire work
