BJORNSON/BARNSON emigration from Iceland to Canada

Roma Report 7 Oct 2012 15:37

I am researching the BJORNSON/BARNSON family who emigrated from Iceland between1895 and 1899. So far I have discovered the following information
Thordur BJORNSON born abt 1871 Iceland married Anna?
Children
Johannes b abt 1893 Iceland
Pau/Pall b 19 May 1895 Iceland (he married my husbands Gt Aunt in 1921 in Canada)
Barney b 16 Feb 1899 Manitoba, Canada
Ragnar b abt 1903 Canada

I believe Anna may then have died & Thordur remarried Vigdi HANNESSON as in 1906 there is a stepson by this surname followed by
Eyrik b abt 1905
Louisa b abt 1907 (believe she may have married a Harry LARSON?)
Karl Kreyer b Mar 1909 died 1998

I would love to know when the family arrived in Canada? I have the date 1901 but this wouldn't fit with Barneys birth date. What happened to Paul's siblings?

I would also be interested to know if my theory regarding the death of Thordur's first wife is correct. I am going to Iceland next week & am hoping I may be able to discover a little more about this family.

Any help regarding the Canadian records would be gratefully received.

King regards,
Roma, UK.

Hi Roma, here's the 1906 census:

1906 Canada Census of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta
Name: Paul Bjornson
Gender: Male
Marital Status: Single
Age: 11
Birthplace: Iceland
Relation to Head of House: Son
Father's Name: Thordur Bjornson
Mother's Name: Wiges Bjornson
Immigration Year: 191 (1901 on original)
Province: Manitoba
Sub-District Description: Selkirk town
Sub-District: 22B
Neighbors:

Household Members:
Name Age
Thordur Bjornson 35 b Iceland
Wiges Bjornson 34 b Iceland
Johnes Bjornson 13 b Iceland
Paul Bjornson 11 b Iceland
Barney Bjornson 8 b Iceland
Ragenar Bjornson 2 b Manitoba
James Hannason 5 b Iceland
Bjomson 10 months b Manitoba

Barney's birthplace had originally been entered as Manitoba but on the original image it has been crossed out and Iceland written.

The family had 5 milk cows.

Paul's military record:

Canada, Soldiers of the First World War, 1914-1918
Name: Paull Bjornson
Residence: West Selkirk, Manitoba, Canada
Birth Date: 19 May 1895
Birth Location: Iceland
Relative: Thordur Bjornson
Relationship: Father
Regiment Number: 3346781

He was a machinist and his religion was Lutheran.

He had his medical exam 27 May 1918 - he was just under 5' 9", had a ruddy complexion, light blue eyes and brown hair. He had scars on his hip, back and buttock.

I really don't know if this is your Barney or a coincidence?

Canada, Soldiers of the First World War, 1914-1918
Name: Barney Bjornson
Residence: Langruth, Manitoba, Canada
Birth Date: 16 Feb 1899
Birth Location: Glenboro', Manitoba, Canada
Relative: Mrs Anna Bjornson ???
Relationship: Mother
Regiment Number: 2147866

He's a store clerk and farmer. It's confusing because the 1906 has Barney's birthplace as Manitoba, changed to Iceland.

The mother's name is correct - could Thordur and Annie have split up rather than her having died?

1916 search at http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/census-1916/index-e.html
for district=Selkirk subdistrict#=4 - you division A, then you want page 8 of 30
NB There's a C in col 4 for Gudmunder, so he's not home, but at Camp Hughes, an army training camp in Canada.

You can search MB BMDs at http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca/Query.php

You could search for bj*son at:

and see enlistment papers.

Thank you all for your replies & to Cynthia for letting me know I'd had replies! There still seems to be a little confusion over which children were born in Canada & which in Iceland but I loved knowing they had 5 milking cows - so much more information than the uk census :-) As is usual it has produced further queries but that is the joy of family history research.
Thank you all again.
