Find Ancestors

Hi
I am trying to track down my slightly elusive grandfather, who i never knew and about whom i knew very little, not even his first name until last week. I found that out from my Dads birth certificate and have managed to find out more since. He is however proving a little tricky to pin down. Here is what i have found so far.
Name. Arthur Rhodes
DOB. 1871 or 1872
Census. 1881 no trace
Census. 1891 Blaby Leicestershire. Boarder
Census. 1901 no trace
Census. 1911. Living in London with wife and four children.
Married. 1902. Boston lincs.
DOD. 1943. In Rochford Essex.
I can find no info for the 1881 or 1901 census, nothing comes from searching his name, is there anyway to locate him from what i have. I have not yet purchased birth, marriage or death certificates because i dont actually know what info i can get from anything other than birth certificates.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Where exactly was Arthur in the 1911 census? The only one I can see with a wife and 4 children has been married 15 years so is not the one married in 1902.

Thanks Maddie, i already found that though it would be interesting to know what a lines man was. I think it was perhaps something related to either telegraph or maybe electrical installations. This would mean he was travelling around. In this census he is not far from his home in Boston which is where he was born and married, so he must have returned there eventually. Advice on finding out about professions would be appreciated.

Where do i start except to say i am staggered at the number and speed of response, thank you all so much.
I think the 1818 census in the name of RHOADES might well be him. He worked for the GPO when he was in London, and my fathers name is Ernest Burrell Rhodes, misspelt as Borrell at some stage. Probably the same as the 9year old brother listed as Ernest B.
Getting close to the stage where i have to spend some money on certificates i think.

I think you are right David. The 1881 census family looks like the right one to me. and probably the birth that Maddie gave earlier. Skirbeck is covered by the Boston Registration District.

Think i need to get my head around the systems used for recording info. Which will take a while, but then i expected this to become time consuming and already it is fascinating. I have gone from having no real information on Arthur to to all this plethora of info, mostly thanks to those of you who have supplied it here. I have lost track of how many greats are involved for me, let alone my own grandchildren, totally staggering.
