Hi

Can anyone help. I am trying to trace either or both of the above. The only info that I have is that Alexander was a commercial traveller & Millicent was a waitress. Millicent lived at 91 Kennington Road, SE London at some period of time (1938?)

I believe that Millicent was born in 1931/32. I have no DOB for Alexander.

They are my paternal grandparents.

Thanks for any help.

When was your father born? His mother's maiden name should be on the birth index. That will make it easier to find their marriage.

Ok. My problem is, my Dad died in 1991. He was born in July 1932.. When he was 5 years old he was taken into the care as his "mother" (Millicent) was destitute and unable to care for him. He was fostered, and as far as I know, never contacted his natrual parents again. The other problem is, he has never been able to trace his own birth certificate. Caused him a few problems during his lifetime. He never spoke about his young life. As far as I ever knew he was abandoned as a very small baby. The information that I have got came from the National Archives via the London County Council care and protection service.

Thanks

Christine

Ahhh, so it was your Father who was born in 1932 and not Millicent as stated in your opening post.

Maybe Alexander and Millicent never married and your Father's birth was registered in Millicent's maiden name?

You will need to give your father's full name to see if anyone can find him in the birth registers.

You give conflicting information in your last post. You say he was abandoned as a small baby but you also say he was taken into care at about 5 years old??

Sorry, yes Millicent was born, I believe, around 1900/1902.
My dad, Gerald Collins, was born in July 1932.
He DOES NOT HAVE a birth cert.
I was always told that my dad was found, as a young baby, on a doorstep.
I have since found out that this is not true. He was placed, with the LCC as a child "In need of care and protection", by the police in December 1938, after his mother (Millicent) was arrested, on 30/12/38, being "Found in a drunken condition"
My dad, then aged about 6yrs & 5 months, was with her hence his being taken into care.
The only piece of evidence that I have, showing my dads parents names, is on the LCC children and young persons act, 1933 sheet which states the name of the child as Gerald Collins of no fixed abode - last address 91 Kennington Road then name of parents or guardians as Alexander Collins & Millicent Collins a commercial traveller and an unemployed waitress. In the earnings box it says that "The mother states that she receives an allowance of 20s from her husband"

She appeared at Lambeth Adult Court on 6/01/39 and was fined 20s or one days detention.

Other info on the sheet states "Place of birth" Hendon (I assume they mean my dad)
Baptised. Yes
Confirmed. No
Who gave this information? Mother

Hope this makes thins a little clearer.

Thanks for your help all.

Just throwing this out in case it comes in useful

Maybe Millie was unmarried at time your dad was born

This is the only Gerald born Hendon July -Sept 1932 with a mother with same maiden name

Mike

Have requested a copy of the Gerald , Hendon birth cert, as suggested by yourself.

Hopefully there will be something on there that I can connect. Will let you know in about 1 weeks time. Fingers crossed.
