Hi, anyone want a real challenge?
Henry George Thornton (1809) born in Ramsgate, is there anyway of finding out if he had a brother John Thornton?
Henry George married Mary Jane (Neame), they owned Sturry mill and had the following children: HenryJohn (1836), he became a General and lived in Fareham for a while...I don't know if he married? I've searched for his death and all I can find is Wetherby last qtr 1904, which is just about possible as his sister lived in Wetherby at that time, but i've no way of telling if it's him? He had a sister Mary Jane (1837) but it's such a common name, she was living at home in 1881 unmarried then drops off the census can't find her anywhere?
Another sister is Clara but I have her sussed, she died in Pau. Her other sister was Lucy D Thornton (1843) can't find her death either but she also lived in Pau, maybe that is why. And finally William (1846) who became an eminent surgeon, married then moved to Ireland.
The biggest headache is trying to trace a John Thornton was he Henry George Thornton's brother???????????? :-( :-S :-S

Hello Carol, have you found out who Henry George's parents were?

I'd suggest that as a starting point and then try to trace baptisms for the children of that couple to see if John was a sibling.

Where is Pau?

Have you found them all on the census? That would give a clue as to whether or not Henry John married.

That looks likely Glyn - but I can't see a death record anywhere to match that?

I was wondering if the Hampshire residence has thrown the system and been recorded as death place instead of Wetherby. ??

The Probate entry reads:

Henry John Thornton of Fareham, Hampshire died 15 October 1904. Probate London 18 January 1905 to Clara Kennedy, Widow.

It doesn't actually state he died in Fareham.

Pam, the probate narrative doesn't say where he died but the probate index (posted above) actually says Death Place: Hampshire, England.

First of all, thank you each and every one of you...it's terrific to get help when you're lost! I'm completely convinced now that Charles Thornton was the father and I know that Frances was the mother as she's shown in 1841, looking after Clara & Mary J at Cottage Place...don't know where Mum is though? Great to know her surname at last, Lancefield.
It still doesn't explain the elusive John Thornton, maybe he was Henry George's cousin? Was Charles from a large family, did he have children and one of them went by the name of John Thornton? I would love to know!!!

PS. Pau, for the non-outdoor types is in the Pyrenees :-D
Thanks again Guys

It should have read Mary Jane Thornton, her father was John Neame Thornton.
Sorry about that! :-D
