Mystery surname - Edgell of Weardale

My great-grandfather George Bell (born 1865) had a sister called "Frances Edgell" Bell (born around 1860), and he called his own son "Francis Edgell" (1897-1916).

It seems obvious that Edgell is a family name but I can find no trace of it so far in the family tree.

George Bell's mother was Jane Phillipson (Philipson) of Stanhope (c1834 - 1857) . His grandmother was Mary Featherstone (c1796).

If anyone know of Edgells from the Stanhope or Lanchester areas of Durham (preferably with links to the Bell, Philipson, Featherstone or Collingwood families) I would be very grateful for any info. I have a lot of info and documentation about the families but as far as the "Edgell" I have come up against a brick wall so far.

Thanks! :-D

Lynn has a private tree which appears to have a number of sources and records so I imagine she has quite a bit of info. There are other public trees that go back on the Bell line without any of them marrying an Edgell

Thanks - have added what I know :-)

This name just does not crop up in any of my research yet seems to be clearly a family name.

(PS tree currently private as working on a theory but don't want to lead anyone else astray!)

have you looked to see if the name Edgell occurs in the area around where they were living?

I'm just wondering if it might possibly be the name of a friend, who they'd asked to be godparent??

giving that surname as the child's second forename could be seen as an honor.
