There has never been such a thing as the correct spelling of a name.

Many names have been spelled in many different ways dependant on who was writing the name down. Up to the end of the 19th century the majority of the population were largely illiterate and relied on others to write their names down on official records such as census returns and BMD registrations.

To add to the confusion because of dialects or accents, the person who wrote the name down may have misheard or misinterpreted the name being given to them so wrote down their own interpretation or spelling. If a person was illiterate then they would not be in a position to query what was being written down. Add to that the possibility that many years later someone reading someone else's handwriting, transcribing the record incorrectly and the number of possible spellings of a name can almost be endless.

Researching:
Don't put off until tomorrow doing what you can do today. If you like doing it today you can do it again tomorrow. Be kind to your children for it is they who will decide which care home you end up in.

Can you please help
How did they spell Ollerenshaw in the 1851 Census ?
In the 1861 census William lived with is wife Elizabeth
and six children at 33 Bernard St Sheffield
The spelling than Ollerrenshaw
