Find Ancestors

I am trying to discover if there is a family link between (Colonel) John Hargreaves of Burnley, Lancashire who died in 1834, and the family of Richard Hargreaves born c1779 in Lancashire whose children were John b1806, Richard 1811-1873, Robert 1819-1861, Alice b1821. If anyone can find a link I would be suitably impressed!

John Hargreaves



John lived at Bank Hall, and was the second son of James Hargreaves of Goodshaw.

He became a Lieutenant Colonel of the 3rd Royal Lancashire Militia, and was a J.P., and Deputy Lieutenant and High Sheriff of the County of Lancashire.

John became rich because he inherited coal mines in Burnley - whose prosperity was rapidly increasing during the industrial revolution - from an uncle, the Rev. John Hargreaves. He, in turn, had acquired them by marrying the widow of their original owner.

Further coal mines passed to John on the death of his brother, James.

It was John Ormerod who extended Ormerod House and surrounded it with trees.

The house became unsafe because of mining subsidence and was pulled down in 1947 after a sale in which valuable wooden panelling went to America.

Another ancient timber framed building still stands at Ormerod.

This was encased in stone by John Hargreaves who put an 1830s' date stone on it.

All that remains of the buildings associated with the original Ormerod House is a very old stone lined ice house below ground level on the east side of the site of the original house where the ground falls away steeply to the river Brun.

John and Charlotte had three children: Eleanor Mary, John and Charlotte Ann.

Brig.-Gen. Hon. Sir James Yorke Scarlett was born on 1 February 1799 at Burnley, Lancashire, England.1,2 He was the son of James Scarlett, 1st Baron Abinger and Louise Henrietta Campbell.1 He married Charlotte Anne Hargreaves, daughter of John Hargreaves, on 19 December 1835.1 He died on 6 December 1871 at age 72 at Bank Hall, Burnley, Lancashire, England.3,2
He gained the rank of Colonel in the service of the 6th Dragoon Guards.1 He gained the rank of General in the service of the Heaby Brigade.1 He fought in the Crimean War. Charlotte Anne Hargreaves was born circa 1806.1 She was the daughter of John Hargreaves.1 She married Brig.-Gen. Hon. Sir James Yorke Scarlett, son of James Scarlett, 1st Baron Abinger and Louise Henrietta Campbell, on 19 December 1835.1 She died on 9 February 1888.1
From 19 December 1835, her married name became Scarlett.1

Just had to say AC has done brilliant here. I feel homesick now. I know all these areas. I used to live there.x
