Walter Howe/How. Born 1856 Chirton/North Shields. S/o Thomas Howe & Esther Hall. Named after his paternal grandfather Walter How(e). Another enigma, but that´s another story.
Have Walter jnr in 61,71 & 81 with his parents. Then he vanishes apart from finding him in Mile End Old Town workhouse in 1911. It´s definitely him, listed as a widower, tailor born North Shields.
The only other clue is a marriage in Mile End in 1895 when he would have been almost 40. Can´t find the marriage on the London marriages & Banns, so it could have been non conformist or register office.Don´t know which of the two ladies he married.
Walter´s occupation of tailor ties in with his maternal grandfather Thomas Hall. The Hall men were tailors in Northumberland for generations.
No idea when Walter moved to London, nor whether he had been married before.
Help please.

Thank you both.
Maddie, I have the death. Presume he died in the workhouse. He couldn´t have been married very long if he was a widower in1911.
Chris. I decided it was Ellen too, but can´t find her in 1901. Wonder if she died before the census?
Back to the drawing board. :-( :-(

Thanks Chris.
That´s the chap. Wonder why he was usung his wife´s surname, except that she wasn´t his wife until 1895.
Presume she was married to someone else.

Thanks Chris.
Have found Ellen Bryant in 1881 saying she is married & with 2 sons Francis aged 7 & Joseph aged 5.
Francis was actually Francis Walter b 1876 Islington, so I´m wondering if Ellen & Walter were together much earlier than I thought (although he is on the 1881 with his parents in Northumberland). Can´t find either baptism, nor can I trace the boys in 1891.
Looks like a dead end for Ellen/Helen as I have no idea what her maiden name was without sending for a birth cert for one of the boys, which I don´t want to do as this isn´t my direct line.
many thanks for your help.

Are you sure about Francis being Walter's son?

There's a good chance Ellen's maiden name was Bryant. 1881 has her born Whitechapel.

Thanks Ozibird.
It had crossed my mind that she wasn´t being entirely truthful on the 81 when she said she was married, but the occupation matches as Walter was a tailor & she was a dressmaker, as was her mother if it´s the right person in 1871.
