James Brown is my great grandfather, he married Sarah Ann Davey in Deptford in 1888. He died in 1922 in Hackney. He changed the family name to Holloway in around 1900, reason unknown but it would appear that it wasn't an official change because on his death certifiacte he is James Holloway Brown so Holloway could be a family christian name. I am trying to find his birth around 1863. James had an oil and paint shop on Chatsworth Road Hackney. In the 1891 census his birthplace is Kent. In the 1901 census (where he is called Holloway) his birthplace is Homerton and the 1911 census his birthplace is Bexley Kent. Sarah died in 1908 and James married Julia Stanmore in Hackney. |

This looks like this could possibly be the parents of the James Holloway Brown who you found the baptism of in 1834. They had a later child Sarah Maria in 1841 |

Thank you for your reply and for the results of your investigation. It would be a huge coincidence if Sarah Maria's baptism at Holy Trinity was not linked to the baptism of James Holloway Brown in 1834. It would be even more convincing if Sarah had Holloway in her name. I am keeping an open mind and continue to dig. |
