Karli, I don't know anything about poll books but if you give us your ancestors names then we may be able to find out more about them using other records.

Karli - this is the 1841. It does not show relationships or marital status.

This link is to a page in FamilySearch where they have a number of collections for the Durham area (scroll down the page on the link).
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list#page=1®ion=UNITED_KINGDOM_IRELAND

There is no index so you would have to sit and browse the images to see if there are any relevant records.

by his death he was 72 yr and died in 1895 making him b 1823
so the one that was 12 in hartlepool dousn t match up if it was my thomas he would of been 18 but down as 15y in 1841 cencus
in 1871 he is down as born1825 1881 he s down as 1825
1891 he s down as 1826 age 65 yr 1895 4 year later when he died he should of been 69 but its down 72 so as you see its a bit difficult to get correct birth but nearly all cencus say born felling and im finding it hard to get Felling records before 1837

Karli - those ages are definitely what's on the original form. The problem is that
back then literacy wasn't too good and often people weren't sure exactly how old they were.

I've struggled to find a marriage for Thomas & Ellen. Wonder if she wasn't free to marry him? I think I've found her in 1851 with her first husband but the earliest possible death that might be his was 1866.

GRAY, Elizabeth Head Widow F 48 1803 Pauper Sunderland, Durham
LIDDLE, Ellen Daughter Married F 24 1827 Sunderland, Durham
GRAY, Hannah Daughter Unmarried F 20 1831 Servant Sunderland, Durham
GRAY, Elizabeth Daughter Unmarried F 18 1833 Sunderland, Durham
GRAY, Thomas Son Unmarried M 16 1835 Rigger Sunderland, Durham
GRAY, John Son M 14 1837 Shoe Maker Sunderland, Durham
GRAY, William Son M 11 1840 Scholar Sunderland, Durham
GRAY, Alice Daughter F 9 1842 Scholar Sunderland, Durham
LIDDLE, George Son Married M 22 1829 Ship Wright Mk Wth Shore, Durham

Piece: 2397 Folio: 162 Page: 7
Registration District: Sunderland
Civil Parish: Sunderland

Address: 10, Vine Street, Sunderland County: Durham

(I think George is actually son-in-law and would be Ellen's husband).

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 23 Sep 2012 15:09

Just to add, I don't think the 1866 death I found was Ellen's husband as there was a newspaper article and that man was an innkeeper married to an Isabella.

karli Report 23 Sep 2012 16:58

thankyou very much for your help and time things could be moving there yes i think she could of been married before but george would nt be no good for husband ellen had a son before she ws married john born seaton i managed to get birth cert for him but no father on i also got marriage of john and it said thomas liddle was father deceased so it looks like she was married before

Karli, I can only suggest looking on FreeBMD for possible deaths for Thomas.
