It would help enormously if Gillian could tell us what the g stands for and also if she knows for definite if the Boer War record is definitely her grandfather.

Boer War 1899-1902 - Soldier details

Name: PHILPOT, G
Rank: Private
Soldier number: 6179
Unit: 3 Battalion Grenadier Guards
Notes:
Age:
Literary references:

Casualty:
Casualty details: Wounded on 28 Nov 1899 at Modder River (1) (Official casualty roll location: Modder River)
Unit: 3 Battalion Grenadier Guards
Source: South African Field Force. JB Hayward & Sons
Gazetteer:
[2924: 2902-2438 confluence] a right bank tributary of the Riet River, it rises near Dewetsdorp flowing north and then eastwards through the Orange Free State to its confluence two kilometres south of Modder River Station in the Cape Colony (Kimberley district; Northern Cape). Variant: Modderrivier (Afrikaans spelling used on the 1: 250,000 map). After the battles of Graspan* and Enslin*, Veg-Gen J.H. de la Rey decided to establish his next defensive position at the confluence of the Riet and Modder Rivers. The British force marching north under Lt-Gen Lord Methuen to relieve Kimberley* started to attack on the morning of 28 November 1899. The 1st infantry (Guards) brigade under Lt-Gen Sir H.E. Colvile attacked the left flank of the Boers, but was held all day. Maj-Gen R. Pole-Carew's 9th infantry brigade advanced along the line of rail and also came under heavy fire, but two companies of the 1st The Loyal North Lancashire regiment managed to cross the Riet River to Rosmead*. This village was evacuated and more troops crossed the river. Pole-Carew's attempts to advance on Modder River Station, were, however, thwarted at Fraser's Farm* and he consolidated that night at Rosmead. Advancing the following morning, the British found that the Boer forces had evacuated their positions during the night; the British had lost 70 killed and 413 wounded whilst Boer losses are estimated at some 60 killed. Although the battle is described as that of Modder River, the action, in fact, took place along the Riet River; to Afrikaner historians it is the battle of Tweeriviere. After the battle Methuen halted at the Modder River to repair the bridge and bring up supplies; a temporary bridge was finished by 10 December. Following defeat at the battle of Magersfontein*, Methuen's forces returned to Modder River Station on 12 December. After the siege of Kimberley was raised, Asst Cmdt-Gen P.A. Cronj

Do you have his age please and full name, no marriage to Parkin that I can immediately see. Did you get the name from a birth of children, and have you found them on any census?

Sorry for the questions, but the more info you can give the easier it will be to find them :-)
