I was wondering if anyone could tell me what information is given on a death certificate

I am still struggling to find any records for John Sayers but i think i may have found his death certificate and wondered if it was worth ordering?

If in England or Wales:

Full name of the deceased

Date and place of death

Age of the deceased

Cause of death

Occupation of the deceased or name and occupation of the husband if it was a woman who was married or widowed

Name, relationship to the deceased and address of the person who reported the death

Date of registration

Name of registrar

From 1969, the deceased's address, place and date of birth and the maiden name if a married or widowed woman

But you also need to be aware that a lot of the information on and English or Welsh death certificate is only what the informant knows ................. and thus may not be correct!


It all depends on how honest the deceased has been.


Some people are not completely honest even with their spouse or children .......... while the informant in other case may be a "helper", a member of staff of a hospital or care home, etc.


The only pieces of information that you can really depend on are:-

date and place of death
cause of death
name of doctor
name, address and relationship of informant
name of coroner (if an inquest has been held)
name of Registrar


Full name of deceased, date and place of birth, age, marital status ...... are all subject to hearsay.
