Thank you Tess. I had found some of the same but thank you especially for the Dolphyn ones. That spelling variation hadn't occurred to me. Went to bed far later after surfing well into the night :-D
I have no certs for any of the Dolphin family. Aside from the cost of buying certs which I just can't do, the Dolphin side is one I am only just beginning to build as it's more of a twig rather than a branch. :-D
And I've just noticed what time you went to bed this morning. :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D
Thank you for looking for/finding so much for me.

Looked again for a marriage on freebmd.
Found William Dolphin married Sarah Elazabeth Blazey 4/1896 in Birmingham.
Have also made a guess as to William Dolphin in 1881 Census.
Found one living in Lower Trinity Street, Aston.
parents William and Bridget, sister Emma and baby brother George.
1891 Census Bridget is a Widow living in Highfield street Aston (Bordesley) with her sons, Willaim 12, and George 10.
Bridget Dolphin dies aged 42 4/1893 in Aston.
1901 Living in Barford Street is George Dolphyn.
He is brother-in-law to Walter Murthey aged 34 and his wife Emma aged 30. (This looks like Emma Dolphyn, sister of William and George)
Haven't found William yet, but a cople of houses are empty in Barford Street on night of Census.
One of them marked "not there on Sunday/Monday night).
Time for bed.

Have you got marriage cert. for Elizabeth and William. The only William Dolphin to Elizabeth I have found in Birmingham is in 1891 to Elizabeth Brown. 1911 Census states married for 16 years, so not quite right. Have you got any birth certs of the children of William and Elizabeth?
(Off to have another look at freebmd)

You are right. It makes sense for it to be them. I have someone I can contact who is related to the Dolphins and lives still in the same area to ask if there is any talk within the family of a change of name or something dodgy.
Hubby, kids and I were out with friends today and I can't even remember how the conversation came around to it but I found out my friend's mom was Dolphin by birth and her nan was Mason.
Hubby has both names marrying into his family in the same quite small rural area around what was then Warwickshire/Worcestershire so I've been working since I got home to expand the names I have on hubby's tree and building a tree for my friend.
Thanks for your help.

No, even with any accent I can't see how he could have misheard Doody for Dolphin......can't even see how he could have written it in his notes to copy up.
But the Doodys just seem to appear on the 1901 and then vanish.

Thanks for the added info Christina.
I'm keeping an open mind and not totally discounting that you have the right family. I'm practising both names in my best Brummie accent and if it is my family that enumerator must have been on the Ansells :-D

Only William Doody births 1897 - 1998 are these three.....
Births Dec 1897 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Doody William Wolverhampton 6b 519
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Births Sep 1898 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Doody William Henry Wolstanton 6b 115
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Births Dec 1898 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Doody William Samuel Newport, Sh. 6a 713
And they are all on the 1901/1911 census with their parents.

Hi Christina,
Thanks for this. I've looked at the image and as you say it is definitely Doody. And, I've possibly found both Williams on FreeBMD.
It was a brilliant possibility. The last time I was looking for my Busby family in the 1901, the transcription was nothing I could ever have guessed at.
Thanks again for looking.

This one is Doody on the image, but I can't see this family in 1911 and William senior is a Blacksmith's Striker.
1901 England Census Name: William Doody Age: 3 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1898 Relation: Son Father's Name: William Doody Mother's Name: Eliza Doody Gender: Male Where born: Birmingham Civil parish: Birmingham Ecclesiastical parish: St Martin County/Island: Warwickshire Country: England Registration district: Birmingham Sub-registration district: St Martin ED, institution, or vessel: 42 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 113a Piece: 2836 Folio: 134 Page Number: 18 Household Members: Name Age William Doody 24 Eliza Doody 22 William Doody 3
All born in Birmingham.
Edit: Can't see a birth reg for either William. There is a William Henry Doody, but he is accounted for in 1911.

Hi All
I've found family in 1911. Posted below for ref.
Don't know what it is about Aston/Birmingham in 1901 but I frequently can't find entries on GR. Would some kind soul please see if they can be found via another site. I'm fairly certain that the family did not move around much. I have confirmed that W stands for William as his mark on the 1911 is confirmed for William Dolphin. Aston/Birmingham came under Warwickshire at this time. Thanks.xJ
