Well, complete success with my objective (with GB's help).
I even found Hawthorn cottages marked on the oldest (1849) map.
It's abt at OS coords 356200, 407000.
The only disappointing thing is it's the one W of town which was my sis-i-l's pick. I picked the other one.

Thanks to all who read my post, and especially to GB.

GB - got PM with attachment OK.
Many thanks for that - I'm off to see which Douglas Bank matches.

Could some one please send me the enumerator's sheet. The 1851 sheet I need is for:
County=Lancashire
Civil Parish=Wigan
Enumeration District=District 1aa

======================
Background

Thanks to Margee, I now have Ancestry's 1851 transcription which I've modified to:

1851 England Census
Street Address: Hawthorne Cottage, Douglas Bank, Long Lane
Registration district: Wigan
Sub-registration district: Wigan
ED, institution, or vessel: 1aa
Household schedule number: 72
Piece: 2199 Folio: 709 Page Number: 21 - Folio: 710 Page Number: 22

Thomas Atherton 39 Ince, Lancashire, England Head M Underlooker
Alice Atherton 39 Hindley, Lancashire, England Wife
James Atherton 18 Hindley, Lancashire, England Son U Agg Lab
Jane Atherton 11 Ince, Lancashire, England Daughter Scholar
Ellen Atherton 9 Ince, Lancashire, England Daughter
Alice Atherton 6 Ince, Lancashire, England Daughter
Edward Atherton 5 Ince, Lancashire, England Son
Thomas Atherton 1 Ince, Lancashire, England Son
---------
Susanna Atherton 2 Mo Wigan, Lancashire, England Daughter

I'm confident I've transcribed the addy correctly.

The problem arises when I try to locate Douglas Bank - I've found 2 of them!!
One is W of town, where the Douglas Bank pub now is:
http://www.joseph-holt.com/Joseph-Holt-Pubs-35-Douglas-Bank.aspx
The other appears on old maps and is N of town, behind the Cherry Garden pub at the junction of Mesnes Rd & Wigan La.

It seems to me seeing the enumerator's sheet is the easiest way to decide which is my Douglas Bank.

Thanks
