Not compulsory to register births then so you might never get a birth cert |

I am almost positive he was born out of wedlock as his name is John Bradley yet his fathers name is John Dickinson. John Dickinson his father never married and doesnt appear to have fathered any other children. Thanks for all your help on the threads but I have already gone over these. Doesnt look like I am going to get any nearer in finding out who is mother was |

I know who his father was because he lived with him in Stainburn . His father was John Dickinson born circa 1818 in Stainburn. John Bradley went to live with his father (John Dickinson) sometime after he was born. I am assuming John Dickinson had an affair with a servant etc etc |

Apart from them not being married I cannot think of any other reason as to why his son would have a different surname to that of his father. I have absolutely no idea as to where to go from here. Ancestors Eh!!!!!!! :-S |

Hi, Sue. Yes, these are the two birth certificates that I applied for. I was able to rule out either of them being the John Bradley that I was looking for. I dont think I am ever going to find out who his birth mother was. Im sure she must have registered the birth though because even though we went to live with his father John Dickinson he kept the surname Bradley. In later years he called himself John Dickinson (middle name) Bradley. |

As you have already been advised, there were no penalties for not registering births until 1875.............and illegitimate births were amongst the least likely to be recorded |

Hi Reggie, I have absolutely no idea who Joshua jnrs father was. I have tried looking in baptisms but again no joy. In the 1851 census record there is a joshua being shown as born in 1826 and relationship to head of house is shown as son. In the 1861 census Joshua Dickinson is shown as being born in 1846 and relationship as grandson ????? |

the 1841 census is interesting. I struggled to find this but eventually found it under the s urname of Dickens and NOT dickinson. The family are all there and I also notice that a Mary Fawcet is listed. No relationship is given. She is there again as M Ann Fawcet in the 1851 census and in the 1861 census a Mary Lawrence is shown (could this be Mary Fawcett who is now married) is there anyway that SHE might figure into the equation ????? and if so how |
