Veronica - read back! Her probate record confirms who she was.

If you want to get further back then the only cert I'd buy would be her marriage to John Styles. There are too many Ellen Norths born around that time on the 1911 census to know which one she'd be.

Dear MarieCeleste,

Many thanks for your help I think Ellen is her name. My uncle Charles (Charlie as he was always known) was married to my mother's sister.
I think I will get his Birth Certificate to confirm this.
Veronica :-)

If he's your uncle then he must have had siblings, one of which would be either your mother or your father. So one of their parents would be his?

Or is he a more distant "uncle" than that?

There are two possible Styles/North marriages but your main question will be answered if you buy that birth certificate.

EDIT: Just realised you said she married Essex - could be this one.

Veronica - have you searched FreeBMD for a marriage between Styles/North?

Have you looked for Charles birth record?

Can anybody help me. I have an uncle who is now deceased but I have found out that he was illegitimate. His name is Charles North and I believe he was born in Cuckfield, West Sussex in 1916. His mother gave him her surname North but I cannot find her Christian Name. She worked at Petworth House, Petworth, Sussex when she became pregnant and after he was born his mother used to take him back to Petworth House and he said he remembers going into a large hall and being taken into a large room where a elderly man used to put him on his knee and talk to him. However I do not know his mother's name but she did go to Essex and married a man with the surname of Styles. :-S
