Isabella G. Shanks & Agnes P. Shanks, Canada

Fiona Report 16 Sep 2012 14:14

I'm trying to find some info on my Gt Grand Aunt - Isabella Gardner Shanks b. 10/10/1905 at 196 Forrest Street, Airdrie, New Monkland, Scotland - Parents Thomas Shanks and Isabella Gardner. I found that she emigrated to Quebec, Canada on 14/08/1926 onboard "Letitia". My dad can vaguely remember that his aunt possibly married someone by the name of Nichol/Nichols/Nicholson, but I'm unsure of how to find this out or if this was her sister Agnes Provan Shanks b. 1896 in Airdrie as she also emigrated to Quebec, Canada on 14/08/1923 onboard "Marloch". Any help on both sisters would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Fiona

Mark

Probably best if you include Canada in your title so that other researchers from over sea's may be able to assist you. Also have you searched trees at the top of this page. Good Luck

There is a tree on a** that says it was Agnes who married a Mr Nicholson. Nothing more is known about her or Isabella.

Isabella is headed for a govt hostel in Toronto:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/microform-digitization/006003-119.01-e.php?PHPSESSID=m90teki814tgffeeclikmksdu2&sqn=421&q2=12&q3=876&tt=625

Agnes is headed for the Sally Ann hostel in Toronto - pob=Forrest St Airdrie - her nok in UK is Mrs Thomas Shanks 75 Graham St Airdrie - she has 1 GBP in cash (plus prepaid rail ticket, I presume):
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/microform-digitization/006003-119.01-e.php?PHPSESSID=uopmifpqjhu862ns5dt63eq0v5&sqn=4405&q2=5&q3=746&tt=4921
I can't make out the vessel (but it's not the Letitia, and it dept 10/8/1923, so can't arr on 14th)

I don't know if those links will work for you - if they don't, go to:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/microform-digitization/006003-110.01-e.php
and select:
7. Passenger Lists: Quebec City (1925-1935)
You want page 421 (of 625) on t-14725
For Agnes, select:
3. Ocean Arrivals, Form 30A, 1919-1924
You want page 4407 (of 4921) on t-15188

Ont marrs are closed for 82 y, so 1929 is latest available, but I think the provincial archives haven't indexed 1929 yet.
(Ancestry has 1928 online - needs a sub - I don't see Agnes there)

Unfortunately don't have the full birth date for Agnes, but have her in the 1901 census at 5 years and then the 1911 census at 15 years

Gee

Gee Report 18 Sep 2012 21:32

OK....the full DOB for her, might help

If she died in the US, the date of birth is really helpful

It looks like a strong possibility Fiona - does that address in Airdrie mean anything to you?

I've had a good look through other shipping lists to see if I could see her with a husband to get his name, but no joy yet.

Fiona Report 21 Sep 2012 10:22

Well caldercruix is where the rest of her family finally settled and was where my father was born & brought up, so very strong possibility that she was visiting family
