I think you might have to risk the marriage cert for William Ashurst to Catherine Shanks. The name sounds Scottish to me, might be worth a shot. As she was born 1868, there is a fair chance she too had been previously married, which might explain the marriage being delayed. If it isn't William junior of course!!
Otherwise you could get what looks like her death cert, but not sure what this would tell you.

Cyril - does that mean you didn't find any matches on Scotland's People?

It could be that they weren't actually married but were cohabiting.

That's possible Mike, but it could also be William's son who is also called William. The 1911 census does say married 7 years and Catherine comes from Inverness so it's possible that they married in Scotland.

You say he had remarried by 1911.

Just wondering if the marriage actually took place later

Have you tried looking on Scotlandspeople for the marriage in case they married in Scotland? The 1911 census says married 7 years, so around 1904.

Hi, I am trying to find details of my great uncle William Ashurst.
He moved from the Wigan area to Gateshead and was there in 1901.
His first wife Elizabeth died about 1903.
According to the 1911 census he is married again to Catherine (unknown).
The census says that she came from the Inverness area.
Does anyone have any information regarding this marriage.
I have tried but cannot find anything.
I would be grateful for any help.
