Hi

I am struggling a little with this lady - she is my great great grandmother.

I am SURE of the following information :

She married (John) Robert Thorpe on 18 Aug 1883 in Malton. She is listed as 25 years (putting DOB around 1858) . She lived in Appleton le Street, Yorkshire and her father is listed as Matthew Teasdale who is a farmer.

I have found them on the 1891, 1901 and 1911 census - living in Appleton le Street. All put her DOB between 1857 and 1859. All list her as having been born in Sleightholmedale, Yorkshire.

However, I cannot find her before her marriage.

Other trees tracking her have various information - many have her DOB as 1856. I have since ordered the birth certificate referenced with this and it shows this particular Elizabeth (Ann) Teesdale as being born in Brompton to Elizabeth Teesdale also of Brompton. Father unknown. This particular Elizabeth seems to have been listed as an "inmate" on the 1861 census without her mother (that I can find).

I don't "think" this is the right person - the DOB is just that little bit too early and then where would Matthew Teasdale fit into this ?

Any help would be appreciated !

Was her 'father' known to be alive when she married?

Who witnessed the marriage?

Father was alive when she married.

Witnesses are listed as George Teasdale and Annie Graven or Craven.

Hello Andrea, it's worth bearing in mind that before 1874 there was no pressure put on parents to register the births of their children so many didn't bother.

As Reggie implies, many fathers on marriage certificates were fictitious to save face with the in-laws.

Another factor could be that her mother was widowed when Elizabeth was very young and then remarried/cohabited with another man and the family were recorded on census under his name.

Age is out though

Yeah these are the census' that have come up in other people's trees and it's the age difference that has so far stopped me assuming it's correct.

If she was born before parents married she would be registered as Atkinson

If we assume Dinah is correct as the mother and Elizabeth was born prior to marriage - then they must have lied on the census ?

Would you also then assume that George was also born prior to marriage as he is listed as older than Elizabeth ?

Or would just just assume Elizabeth was in fact born in 1861 and it's her age on her wedding certificate that's incorrect ?

If this proves to be correct cert for George then yes, it could be that Elizabeth's age is wrong at marriage
