Kathleen Report 11 Sep 2012 16:53

A distant relation of mine susannah Aslet clark married George Voulstaker on 23/6/1844 and later 3/8/1874 as Susannah Voulstaker married James Lunn. I thought George must have died but George appears on 1871 census with wife Charlotte who I believe is Charlotte Field. In 1871 Susannah appears to be alone.I have tried to find a marriage for George and Charlotte but cannot find one. They had a number of children.
Voulstaker is an unusual name and the occupation for both these men is Bootmaker.
Did they divorce or did susannah commit bigamy.
Susannah does not appear to have any children.
Any help in solving this mystery would be much appreciated.

Divorce wa very rare in C19th and really only available to the super wealthy. Why did Usannah claim for her martial status on her second marriage cert?

Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 11 Sep 2012 17:11

she is a monthly nurse on both the 1861 and 1871 census and says she is married too on the 1871.

On the face of it they had separated and she took the chance of remarrying whilst George didnt.

It wasn't unusual . sometimes people thought if they were separated for 7 years then they could remarry. not true but it did happen

Was he a widower on marriage. Looks as though she married cos he had children and it looked better to be married.

Wonder what she said her marital status was on the cert

I think that is Georges parents although his mother is Mary when living with them later.
The census shows George (1826)with his new family and wife charlotte( much younger than him) This I am sure is the same george as the one that married Susannah Aslet clark.

Kathleen Report 11 Sep 2012 17:21

I think you are correct . She had no children of her own and was working as a nurse. George found a younger partner who could give him children and Susannah married James Lunn and looked after his children. I hope that they were all happy at last. Seems a bit sad for Susannah though

William aslett clark was her brother and my 2x great grandfather.

Thanks for the help. I had come to the same idea but wanted fresh eyes to look at the story to see if I had missed something.

Given his age 71 in 1880 that would mean he was born C1809 which indicates he is the father of the George I am reaearching. on 1841 census it says he is from foreign parts!!!
