John Maskelyne was born circa 1836 in Mildenhall, Wiltshire. He married one of my ancestros - Eliza Mortimer. They appear on the census returns all the way up until 1891 when George is living in ogbourne st George, wiltshire while his wife Eliza is a patient in hospital in preshute, wiltshire. She died shortly after. I have not been able to find a death record for John though. There are two that I have found in Wiltshire with the same spelling as I have listed above but the birth year doesn't work out. I know it's bound to be a spelling issue but so far haven't worked out the right combination. I would appreciate any help in tracing his death record. |

If his death was registered by someone who didn't really know him, the recorded age could be wrong |

Ooo - I reckon that is him on the census given it states Minal as his birthplace. His birth year is definitly out by 10 years and there isn't an error in transcription like I thought there might - census definitely reads age 77 yrs. I searched 1891 census for another John Mask* born Mildenhall/Minal in case it was another John but I couldn't find one . |

I think the John above is your man. Mildenall is the same place as Minal! |

I will see if I can find the marriage when I next go to Wiltshire Record Office to see if there is any information on it that links him to my man before paying out for the certificate. Still can't find a death record for him though! |

Ah - I see it now Gin - I think I must have mistook it as part of your signature That one makes sense being in Swindon and where he lived - there is that 10 year discrepancy but it tallies with the latter two census returns so I think it is him. I have just re-read through the posts and noticed one that I must have missed - probably posted at same time I was posting - I see Gin you put the 1911 census on there too. Thank you very much for all your help! |
