James Sturt (1781-1822)

Wend Report 6 Sep 2012 14:42

I am trying to establish the name of James Sturt's wife. It is stated on a family tree, written by a relative of my husband some years ago, that her name was Anna (middle name Kemp) Hollingdale, and from my research she was born 1783 in Washington, West Sussex.

However, I have a copy of an article written in the Sussex County Magazine (circa 1930) in which it states that James Sturt's son William (born 1819, Plumpton, West Sussex) was the son of one of the daughters of Mr. Kemp of Kemp Town, Brighton. Thomas Reed Kemp (1782-1844), son of Thomas Kemp and Anna Reed (or Read) was instrumental in building the village of Kemp Town in the 1820s, which is now a very well-known area to the east of Brighton. It is also stated that my husband's family are connected to Thomas Reed Kemp. Could she have been the latter's sister?

To add to the confusion I have recently made contact with a Sturt descendant, who states that, according to his records, James Sturt married a Sarah Worsell, although he has been unable to substantiate this.

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

Thomas Read Kemp (December 23, 1782 – December 20, 1844) was an English property developer and politician. He was the son of Sussex landowner Thomas Kemp, whose farmhouse in Brighton was rented by the Prince of Wales in 1786.
Biography

He conceived and developed the Regency-style Kemp Town estate in Brighton on the south coast of England. He was Member of Parliament for Lewes from 1811–16 and 1826–37 and for Arundel 1823–26. He fled Britain in 1837 to escape his creditors and died in Paris in 1844. He is buried in Père Lachaise Cemetery.

In 1805, Kemp graduated in theology at Cambridge University. He married Frances Baring the following year. They had four sons and six daughters. She died during childbirth in 1825 and was buried at St. Nicholas's Church.

A tablet was erected to his memory at St Nicholas's Church next to his wife's.

Thankyou both. I'm still confused as to where the name Hollingdale comes into it though. According to the written tree I have, William was christened 11.11.1819 at All Saints, Lewes and brought up at Streat Place, Streat, Nr. Plumpton. His siblings are named as Anna Kemp Sturt (1814-1829) and Henry Hollingdale Sturt (1816-1831). Incidentally, I said that James's wife is named as Anna on that tree, but it is in fact Anne.

I wonder if perhaps my husband's relative got her her facts wrong, but it all looks beautifully researched, with lots of photos of various churches, gravestones and tombs, two of the latter belonging to William Sturt in Streat Church graveyard and the Hollingdales in Plumpton Church graveyard.

Any further help would still be appreciated. Many thanks.

Thanks to you all for your time in having a look at this one for me. I think there must be a connection somewhere to Kemp, but I need to put in a bit of leg-work to find it. It's going back on the back-burner for the time being. Shame no-one else has Thomas Reed Kemp in their tree or his parents. Why would Ann, Anne, Anna Hollingdale have Kemp as her middle name and 2 of her children named Anna Kemp Sturt and Henry Hollingdale Sturt, I ask myself.

At least I know that my recent Sturt contact is wrong in his assumption that James Sturt married Sarah Worsell. He said that my information re Anna Kemp Hollingdale as James Sturt's wife has, I quote, blown apart his side of the family tree and set them completely adrift, which I find very strange, as I named the parents and grandparents of James that I have in my tree and he didn't contest those. I think he must be been barking up the wrong tree!
