Michelle (the first one posting!) - depending on how old your two young children are it could be a great project to involve them with, helping them find their own family history and making it educational looking up things about how people lived in the times of their ancestors.

I think it's great that people on this site are so willing to help out. I know I have used the services of site members a couple of times with great success and have been able to go back a couple more generations that I had not been able to find on my own.

I would never pay for the services of a researcher.
A friend in OZ hired one to find a death cert for her grandmother.
Family had been told that in the 1930's, as a very young woman/mother she had been placed in an institution in Argyll.
The researcher took a large payment and many months to get in touch again.
He insisted that the mental hospital had no records of her and that he could not find a death record anywhere in Scotland.

I found the death record instantly on a single search...exactly where the family was told she was placed.
The grandmother had been in the Asylum for almost 30yrs

Why not post the branch of your tree that you want researched on these boards .

There are lots of very good researchers on here that I am sure will do a much better job for you than paying someone.

Please post all the info you have.

One member of this site used a so called expert.

But guess what - he was proved wrong by helpers on these boards. Unfortunately that member would not accept that the professional had got it wrong.

a genelogist cost about £250 per day Plus Certificates plus expensives,but they dont always come up with the correct trees.i have just had dealings with one,which have been featured on a well know tv program,and i point out a few mistakes they made that could have cost the heirs a small fortune in a law suit

Googling gives a rough idea.. generally seems to be about

£ 140 150 One Line Traced back to the early 1800s

some genealogists seem to be charging about £25 an hour, plus expenses

But it really depends on how far back, what information you have to start with, what travel costs may be incurred, what certs need to be bought.

You can probably do a lot of that research yourself, for much less money , just doing it a bit at a time?

Or ...you could put details on here and see what helperful members come up with !

Unless they can visit record offices for records that are not online then why waste your money

Most of us don't approve of "professional researchers". I know I don't.

What - when you get free help on the boards.

No guarantee they will get better results than the helpers on these boards

Hi - I'm not sure I have posted this in the right place and am hoping that it is Ok to post it here - apologies if not.

I started researching my family tree several years ago and as much as I would love to spend time getting back into doing this, with 2 young children it's just not possible at the moment.

I really want to research one particular branch of my tree and wondered if anyone can recommend someone who can do this for me. I have no idea what the cost of this sort of service would be but would be very grateful for any advice.
