Rose Report 2 Sep 2012 18:04

I am trying to find my grandfather on the 1911 census.
He was born in 1884 in Bristol son of william and Emma Broom. I have found him on 1891 and 1901 living in Jacobs wells Bristol but cannot find him in 1911.
He did not marry my grandmother until 1923. I know he was a tram driver then.
I never knew whether he was married before he married my grandmother- hilda Bevan, he may have been because he was 39 when he married her.
thanks for nay help

Thank you everyone. yes I think the M herbert c is him and I know the place "The Deanery".

Thank you Marieceleste for the information re his marriage and divorce.
I cannot believe I have not got the marriage certificate. Because my mum was born in Hildas first marriage to William Bevan I have everything relating to that, and somehow have omitted getting the information on Herbert Broom!

all a learning experience for doing Family history.

Again thank you so much to everyone

Must have been a scandal at the time:

Western Daily Press - 1 December 1921
LOCAL DIVORCE CASE

In the divorce division yesterday, before the president Sir Henry Duke, Herbert Chas Broom, taxi-cab driver of Radnor Road Bristol, was granted a decree nisi on the grounds of the misconduct of his wife, Maud Mary Broom, with a co-respondent named Roper, pianoforte tuner of Kingsdown Bristol.
The petitioner was married on October 31 1911 at Westbury-on-Trym and subsequently lived various places in Bristol. In April 1915 he joined the army and was demobilised in August 1919 when he and his wife went to live at Melbourne Road, Bishopston, Bristol. She began to drink and insisted on a separation, eventually he agreed and left his wife in the home.
On July 15 last he went to the home in Bishopston and broke open the bedroom door. His wife was in bed and Roper was also in the room. Both admitted misconduct.
Thos Wm Lurway, St Michael's Hill, Bristol corroborated. He said the co-respondent was a pianoforte tuner but at the time he was employed at a dairy in Kingsdown, Bristol.
The decree was made with costs awarded against the co-respondent.

Just to tidy up a loose end, looks like Maud Mary reverted to her maiden name:

England & Wales, Death Index: 1916-2006
Name: Maud Mary Curnock
Birth Date: 1886
Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1974
Age at Death: 88
Registration district: Leicestershire Central
Inferred County: Leicestershire
Volume: 6
Page: 2039

Nelson Hope Lucy Roper (to give him his full name) was married in 1910 and 1938 and died 1948, all Bristol

Wow!
How interesting.
I have looked Nelson roper up on 1911 census and he had a wife Kate, they were living with her parents in Longmead Avenue Bristol, which is about 2/3 streets away from Melbourne Road!! Wonder if Kate and Nelson divorced too , she most probably knew about it if it was in the paper.
Thanks Marie celeste

MarieCeleste Report 2 Sep 2012 19:13

I can't see a divorce for the Ropers, maybe the poor women just put up with him or they just separated?

Divorce was very expensive in those days - Nelson would probably be wiped out after paying Herbert Broom's costs.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 2 Sep 2012 19:18

One good thing, I can't see any Broom/Curnock births so there were no children suffered as a result of the divorce.

Rose

Rose Report 2 Sep 2012 19:18

Yes I hear divorce was expensive, thats why some had bigamist marriages wasn't it.

It will be interesting to see where they were in the 1921 census, but have a long wait for that!

Poor old Nelson would have loads of Pianos to tune or milk to be delivered to pay for the Costs !

Rose

Rose Report 3 Sep 2012 12:02

Thanks Marie celeste. I did wonder if there were any children. Well I hope Herbert ended up happy as he married my nan and took on her two girls ( one was my mum)
Herbert and Hilda went on to have one son Desmond who they adored. I was
5 when Herbert died but have some vague memories but some great photos of us all together. My mum certainly thought the world of him too so a happy ending!

MarieCeleste Report 3 Sep 2012 12:08

Well, I'm pleased everything worked out well for Herbert - sounds like he deserved some happiness!
