Yes thats correct Rootgatherer and Anne, I've nearly got it sorted in both trees (on ancestry as well) . I'm actually chasing the Hendersons just now for a friend who thinks that my wife family and them are connected in some way.

Hi Rootgatherer,
Ian got a wee bit mixed up on his opening thread.
I suspect he was given correct info without actual dates and incorrectly assumed that Margaret Naismith Bruce b 1875 was the person in question, ( ie married Alexander Henderson)

The person he was referring to was actually the grand daughter from his opening thread.
William Bruce and Margaret Naismith
son William b 1876 married Susan Campbell in 1899
William and Susan had a daughter MARGARET NAISMITH BRUCE but she wasn't born until 1907... and it was definitely SHE who married Alexander Henderson in Edinburgh in 1936!

Your heading is Margaret Naismith Bruce born 13 April 1875. She was born in Larkhall but doesn't appear with her family on the 1881 census.

She died 19 March 1876 aged 1 year at 3 Drygate Street..

Dalserf, Lanark area. I have a Robert Bruce marrying a Margaret Naismith, in Dalserf, on 30Dec 1859; they later moved to Shotts, Lanark (where Robert was a grocer and spirit merchant),& they had 7 known children. Margaret Naismith was the daughter of John Naismith, a baker, and Helen McNare, both of Dalserf

(above might be useful, from an old query below!)

William Bruce and Susan Campbell married in SHOTTS in 1899.
You would need to obtain the marriage cert, but I think this is Susan with her family in 1891

I think you need to get your information from Scotland's People

It is a pay per view site (no subscriptions) ....... and you can do a search for free, then buy credits if you see an entry that looks of interest.

Only there will you get the true information on birth, marriage and death dates.

As well as the full census.

Also ....... never trust the trees on ancestry. Far too many people add information without checking whether it is correct or even applies to their person. They see the little "green leaf" tip from ancestry, and assume that it MUST be correct. However, the leaf tips are just that ........ TIPS.

Hi Ian,

William and Susan's births may have been mistranscribed. He could well be 28 and she could be 23 but we are unable to view the actual image for Scottish records. To do that, you need to buy credits for scotlandspeople and view the image through them.

You can also access the Scottish 1911 to see if Peggy or any other child has been born by then, but again, you need credits.

Also everything Sylvia has said in the previous post is absolutely correct.

SylviaInCanada Report 3 Sep 2012 22:38

Ian

years of birth on any census can be up to 2 years out, either way

and on the 1841, they can be as much as 4 years too early .... that's because the enumerators on the 1841 were supposed to round down the age of all people over the age of 15 to the nearest 5.

On all other censuses, the differences are due to the fact that people gave their age, and then the modern day transcriber had to translate the age into estimated year of birth.

The age of the person depends on when the census was taken vs the actual birth date .................. someone whose birthday was the day after the census would appear to be 1 year younger.

so never, ever, take the birth year from a census as absolute .... always add +/- 2 years.

That could explain the difference between Susan's apparent birth year on the census vs the information in your family bible.

Let's not get into the problem of people who gave their wrong age .............. either out of vanity; because they did not want to appear too much older or younger than their spouse; or because they honestly did not know how old they were! :-D

Hi,
Thanks for the info,
the only trouble is that we have the family bible and its written in there that William was born 24th Feb 1873 and Susan born 1874.
They were of money and indeed its remembered by my m-in-law about the spirit link.
