Find Ancestors

I only have Navy records for my Grandfather Albert Alfred Stevens which states he was born 16th April 1879 in Dulverton Somerset and he was a shoemaker when he first enlisted on 22nd August 1898 for 12 years.
He was lost at sea 13th May 1915 when the ship Goliath was sunk.
He married Matilda Louise Wiltshire 9th July 1907.
According to the marriage certificate Albert's father had the same name Albert Alfred Stevens but was deceased.
Can anyone help me trace my grandfathers parents.

He is a bit of a mystery (unless I'm being really thick today) as I cannot find a birth for him , nor a census return before 1911????

Ancestry links his records to an Alfred in 1881/1891...birthplace Shipham. Seems somehwat tenuous

As he joined the RN in 1898, he was possibly on board a ship in 1901,

The witnesses on the marriage certificate were a Charles Albert Tristram and Mabel Beatrice Tippett.

There is no mention of next of kin on the Navy Records when he first signed on but his wifes name and address is on the Debt of Honour Register from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

Still cannot find any reference to him in 1881 or 1891 or a birth
Was wondering if he was a workhouse baby.............................. or maybe he startrd his naval career on a training ship for boys from workhouses, homes etc.
